Leadership Team

Richard Watson

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Before founding Inigo, I spent 33 years with Hiscox Ltd. During this time, Hiscox grew to be the largest global specialist insurer, with GWP in excess of $4bn. My career saw me work through the ranks to become Chief Underwriting Officer – a position I held for seven years. Previously, my career encompassed multiple lines of business in insurance and reinsurance, culminating in becoming CEO of Hiscox Global Markets before I moved to Hiscox USA to serve as CEO during its formative years.

Russell Merrett

Founder and Chief Underwriting Officer

With 25 years’ experience in the insurance sector, my career spans broking, underwriting and launching an insurtech, Kinsu, in 2017. I am the former Managing Director of Hiscox London Market. Having joined Hiscox in 1997 as a reinsurance underwriter, I spent my next 16 years in senior positions, including Active Underwriter for Syndicate 33. Before my time at Hiscox, I was a reinsurance broker at Greig Fester. Since 2015, I have served as an Independent Non-Executive Director of RenaissanceRe Syndicate Management. Previously, I was also Chair of the LMA’s Reinsurance Business Panel and served on the Non-Marine Committee.

Stuart Bridges

Founder and Chief Financial Officer

A chartered accountant, my previous roles include Chief Financial Officer of Control Risks Group, Chief Financial Officer of Nex Group plc (formerly ICAP plc) and Chief Financial Officer of Hiscox plc – a position I held for 16 years. Before Hiscox, I held numerous positions at financial services companies in the UK and US, including Henderson Global Investors. I am a Non-Executive Director, and Chair of the audit committee of Caledonia Investments plc and investment firm UIL Ltd. Previously. I was Chair of the LMA Finance Committee and a member of the ABI Finance Committee.

Andrea Aakre

Chief People and Development Officer

I head up our dynamic HR team. We support our Inigo colleagues to reach their full potential and succeed, while showcasing why outstanding talent should join us. I also drive diversity and inclusion – ensuring we reflect the clients we work with, and benefit from the different backgrounds, viewpoints and experiences a diverse team offers. In my free time, I love to travel and hike my way up the highest mountains.

Alice Kaye

Chief Operating Officer

Steve Agutter

Head of Claims

I head up our Claims team. We support clients through the claims process, settling claims as soon as possible or helping to defend a claim against them. Our diverse team of industry experts, complemented by the development of less-experienced claims staff differentiates us in the London market. I enjoy cycling and have conquered some Tour De France iconic climbs. After having to give up football, I’m left with the frustration of supporting West Ham.

Craig Knightley

Deputy Chief Underwriting Officer and Head of Third Party Insurance

Running our Casualty and Financial Lines involves refining our underwriting teams’ annual plan from reinsurance strategy to deciding which sub-segments are (and aren’t) most profitable. I also focus on career development and how we can support people to achieve their individual aspirations. When I’m not a taxi for my two young boys, I like playing and watching most sports, particularly football. I’m also studying for an Executive MBA. It’s a lot of work – but fun.

George Stratts

Head of First Party Insurance

Matthew Rolph

Head of Distribution and Capital Partners

Our underwriting wizardry is flanked by Capital and Distribution. Beyond our core investors, our passion is developing the very best third-party capital support, including reinsurers and co-insurers of our portfolio – supporters we see as partners. I lead the development, strategy and management of these partnerships, and how we distribute this capital to key brokers – ultimately benefiting policyholders. Pre-Inigo, I was in Hiscox’s Executive team, and previously led placement across Specialty and Retail for Marsh UK.

Erdal Atakan

Chief Information Officer

I lead our fantastic technology team. We aim to use the best tech to enable superior data and analytics – intuitively and efficiently – at the point of underwriting. To achieve this, we deliver all systems and infrastructure-related projects using cloud native technology. We also make sure Inigo’s daily operation runs smoothly – working with our partners to deliver a superior computing experience. Outside work, I’m an exercise enthusiast and enjoy mountain biking around the Surrey Hills.

Vanessa Hartley

Chief Risk Officer

As head of our risk management function, I help Inigo achieve our goals by ensuring we understand and appropriately manage our risks – and opportunities. Outside of work, I love to sing. I'm actively involved in my local choir, which I was a founder member of. Our stand-out performances include Southwark Cathedral, Hampton Court and the V&A.

Maeve Grant

Chief Investment Officer

As Chief Investment Officer, I ensure our portfolios generate a competitive return for the right level of risk, and our invested assets play nicely with our liabilities. I do this by working with fantastic external managers and leveraging as much Inigo knowledge as I can. Outside work, I am a non-committed hobbyist. I’ll try anything (most likely terribly) and have been knitting a scarf for my mother for about seven years. I’ll finish it one day.

Direct & Facultative Property

The Great Fire of London caused an estimated £10m worth of damage to the streets of London, yet few of us know its aftermath led to the creation of modern insurance. Following the Great Fire, Nicholas Barbon founded a building insurance business and London's first fire insurance company. We offer specialist insurance against direct physical loss or damage, business interruption and natural catastrophe to properties worldwide – particularly the US, UK, Europe, Canada, Japan and Australia. Our extensive cover spans Commercial Real Estate, Public Entity, Hospitality, Retail/Wholesale, Institutions, Manufacturing, Energy (North America), Power Generation (North America), Media & Telecommunications, and Healthcare. Political Violence & Terrorism

Nothing would give us greater pleasure than the ability to drop PVT from our product lines. Sadly, in this increasingly polarised world, where every day seems to bring new threats, we’re needed more than ever. We provide cover for terrorism, strikes, riots and civil commotion, political violence, war on land, malicious attack, threat, active assailant and active shooter. Our clients range from multinationals, energy and power companies, sporting and social event management to private individuals. Our specialist, highly-experienced and market-leading team underwrites both UK and international clients on an XL, direct and facultative basis. I qualified as a ski Instructor in Canada, and love hitting the slopes as often as I can throughout winter.

Henry Sloan

Underwriter

As Assistant Underwriter for the Political Violence & Terrorism team, I review and underwrite accounts submitted by our broking partners, and decide if they are within our underwriting appetite. If so, I price up terms. I am a long-suffering Peterborough Utd fan, and a very keen, albeit average golfer with an 11 handicap. My golfing career peaked with a round of 73 at Royal West Norfolk, where I three-putted the 18th. I’m still kicking myself.

Aviation War

During WW2, brave American women volunteered for the experimental Women Airforce Service Pilots. They faced huge risks testing overhauled planes, flying aircraft to military bases, and towing targets for live anti-aircraft gun tests. Protecting WASP would’ve been an honour for our highly-skilled, market-leading Aviation War team, who welcome innovation and understand a willingness for risk. Our global client base covers major operators plus associated lessors, banks and finance parties, manufacturers and general aviation. With a service-led relationship with our brokers and clients, we cover physical loss or damage to aircraft, confiscation per policy form, aircraft spares, plus excess third-party war liability. We also specialise in covering operations into distressed territories on behalf of governmental, non-governmental, or humanitarian organisations.

Directors & Officers Liability

The biggest business cliché is the kitchen table idea that becomes a global powerhouse. But that doesn’t make it less true. Facebook began as a conduit for Harvard students, while Amazon started as an online bookshop. We know people with vision need to take risks. Directors and Officers protects the newest start-ups to companies who influence the world. Specialising in US, Australian, European and Latin American-listed companies, Directors and Officers insurance can be tailored to your individual needs – covering industries at the cutting edge of innovation, like Biotechnology and Cloud software, to those that underpin the global economy, such as mining and shipping. General Liability

Our culture is packed with sidekicks - from Don Quixote and Sancho Panza to Batman and Robin. Though perhaps less eye-catching, these complementary heroes typically take on the more standard – though no less important – risks while their flamboyant partners tackle areas requiring unique expertise. General Liability is the perfect companion to our more specialised insurance lines, protecting a range of Fortune 1000, US-based industries such as construction, rail, hospitality and real estate, mining, manufacturing, transportation, and food and beverages. Our appetite for risk, together with flexible underwriting covering a wide variety of attachment points, means we can offer bespoke cover to your particular needs and create a long-term partnership that benefits everyone. Download Summary

Ed Wallis

Head of General Liability

I head up our General Liability (GL) team of underwriters. We provide third-party liability coverage (both public and products) to a large group of diverse risk managed companies. Typically, these are US-based and part of the Fortune 1000. My three young kids take up most of my free time. When I do get a moment of peace, I am an avid Chelsea fan. I also really enjoy cooking and eating out.

Flavia Lyons

Underwriter

As a General Liability Underwriter, I analyse, price and negotiate contract terms for large and complex third-party liability risks, predominantly from the US. With a diverse expertise and appetite, ranging from excess casualty for Fortune 1000 businesses to primary level coverage for SMEs, I aim to create long- term solutions and client relationships. To switch off, I enjoy running, tennis and learning to solve cryptic crosswords.

Olivia Reynolds

Underwriter

As an Underwriter on our US General Liability team, I offer clients cover for their third-party liabilities arising from the products they sell or their premises. While we focus on US-based Fortune 1000 companies, we also cover global exposures. Our portfolio mainly includes the rail, construction, manufacturing, and hospitality sectors. Outside of work, I’m attempting to learn to play the piano, and have a serious love/hate relationship with running.

Alasdair MacKechnie

Underwriter

As an Underwriter, I analyse and assess risk for US-based companies. We offer the risk transfer that provides corporations with the security and stability needed to develop and grow their business. Away from the office, I love to stay active and play squash whenever possible.

Financial Institutions

"Who guards the guards?" said a loose translation of Roman poet Juvenal’s original Latin question. Businesses and individuals alike rely on banks, building societies and other financial institutions to protect our cash and investments. But who protects the protectors? We provide a full suite of financial lines products – including crime, professional indemnity, and directors and officers cover for a broad range of financial institutions based largely in the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and Australia. Our clients are exposed to a range of risks relating both to their business line and location. We aim to say yes. We will work with you to provide meaningful capacity and create innovative solutions, backed by proactive, supportive, and effective claims handling – from initial notice to payment. From my experience as a broker, I recognise the importance in providing a comprehensive and bespoke solution to our clients, with a human touch. Outside of work, I am a keen skier, cricketer and runner. I also enjoy tennis and golf (with a bit more practice needed for the latter). I am a rugby fan and support Bath as patiently as I can.

Marine Liability

Since 30,000 rubber ducks escaped from a container lost overboard during extreme weather in 1992, they have bobbed gently across the globe – even helping oceanographers map ocean currents. However, losses and accidents at sea and onshore are rarely so media-friendly, and can massively impact revenue and reputation. We protect shipowners, operators and charterers, and financial institutions involved in the maritime industry such as traders, cargo owners and pollution products. We also support shoreside industries from port, terminal and marina operators to shipbuilders and repairers, protect ports property, and can cover niche areas such as Certificate of Financial Responsibility providers. Covering sole traders to multinational corporations worldwide, Marine is available on a direct and reinsurance basis, and can be tailored to your particular needs. Download Summary

Head of Marine and Energy Liability

I head up Marine and Energy Liabilities. For Marine, we insure everything from shipowners and shipyards to maritime employees. On the energy side, we protect contractors and operators working on projects ranging from refineries to offshore energy construction. I have supported Everton FC through thin and thin for over 45 years.

A highlight was sighting the Three-wattled bellbird, vulnerable to extinction and one of the loudest birds on the planet.

Energy Liability

Earth’s sun is set to burn out in 4 to 5 billion years – give or take – which may be one energy risk too far even for us. In the meantime, we provide energy companies with liability coverage resulting from third party bodily injury, property damage or pollution liability, so that we can continue to switch the lights on at home. As the energy industry explores more sustainable options and continues to evolve, our cover evolves with you. We protect the old and the new – from Onshore Oil, Gas and Petrochemicals industries to Power and Renewables – based primarily in North America, Europe and Australasia. Our technical approach to underwriting means we truly understand the risks you face and can provide cover tailored to the specific needs of your operation. Download Summary
